Sgt. Pepper is 50 years old! For many of us, we don’t know a world without it. Pepper was the album that defined the Beatles as being in it for the long game. It was as though everyone suddenly came to the realization that the Beatles were a big part of the fabric of the 20th century. We all know the hits off the album – “When I’m Sixty Four”, “A Day in the Life” and “With a Little Help From My Friends.” But upon continual listen – it’s the deep tracks that become more and more compelling. George Harrison’s “Within Without You” was like adding a new spice to your diet. “Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite!” sounds like you’re taking a trip. And “She’s Leaving Home” brought old and young together and prepared them for change.

He now performs around the world and has garnered widespread praise for his untiring efforts to reach new audiences. O’Riley has performed as a soloist with virtually all of the major American orchestras. He strives to introduce new audiences to classical music with an almost missionary zeal by performing piano arrangements of music by Radiohead, Elliott Smith, Pink Floyd, and Nirvana alongside traditional classical repertoire. A prolific recording artist, O’Riley has recorded the music of Beethoven, Stravinsky, Scriabin, Liszt, Ravel, Gershwin, Debussy, and John Adams for Sony Classical, Oxingale Records, RCA Red Seal, Decca and Harmonia Mundi.

America’s Idol, Ruben Studdard, officially released RUBEN SINGS LUTHER to his musical hero Luther Vandross and launched a 25 city ‘Always and Forever Tour’ starting in Sacramento, California on April 8th. It all started with my mom who has always loved Luther and played his music in our home continuously – especially during Christmas. You can say I grew up with the world’s biggest Luther fan. In my young teens, I would perform a Luther song or two at weddings and people would keep requesting more of his hits. I recorded ‘Superstar’ awhile back which was Grammy nominated and sang different Luther songs during my live shows. But people always asked when I was going to do an album of Luther’s songs. Happily the day has arrived. It was a thrilling experience selecting the songs from his different albums and putting my own interpretation on them. I am so proud of this record”, commented Ruben.

It was in 1983 that Howard Jones first burst upon the contemporary music scene with his very English songwriting, pioneering synthesizers and thought provoking lyrics. He set out his manifesto in his very first single ‘ New Song’. The lyrics called on the listener to challenge their preconceived ideas, to see both sides and ‘throw off your mental chains’. New Song was used in a pivotal scene in ‘Breaking Bad’ where Aaron Paul’s character Jessie Pinkman questions if he wants to ‘play by the rules’. New Song peaked at number 3 in the UK singles charts.

Picture this: America is under construction. The West is booming. The railroad is being developed. In the middle of the desert, a town comes to life. A saloon opens its doors. A place to gather and share tales, it quickly becomes a theatre for stories of all kinds. In Cirque Éloize’s Saloon, the infectious energy of folk music sets the tone to an acrobatic comedy that sweeps the spectators away in a mad rush. Enigmatic, colourful characters come together and reveal themselves, resulting in a series of unexpected situations, unfolding to the rhythm of acrobatic prowess and original choreographies. Under the spell of the saloon’s beautiful Belle, the lover sets off a chase worthy of the greatest Westerns. The lovebirds on the run wreak havoc everywhere on their path; from the deserted plains to the depth of the mines— until the ultimate acrobatic showdown. Walking through Saloon’s doors means entering a mythical atmosphere created by live music and the exhilarating pace of spectacular performances. Swing open the Saloon doors and lasso up some fun for the entire family. Enter a mythical world where theatre and circus collide for 85 minutes of non-stop live folk music combined with strength, agility and original choreography. It was on September 23, 2008 that Blitzen Trapper, after putting out three albums on its own label, released its fourth full-length album, Furr, via Sub Pop. At that time, it was a record that captured exactly where the band’s frontman, Eric Earley, found himself, both literally and metaphorically, geographically and existentially. Not that the Portland-based musician actually remembers much about the creation of the record’s 13 intriguing, spellbinding songs. Or, more specifically, what its songs actually mean, either now or then. Instead, Furr, stands as a kind of tribute and elegy to the city that inspired it, but that, a decade later, no longer exists.

From the days of playing greasy local juke joints to headlining major festivals, JJ Grey remains an unfettered, blissful performer, singing with a blue-collared spirit over the bone-deep grooves of his compositions. His presence before an audience is something startling and immediate, at times a funk rave-up, other times a sort of mass-absolution for the mortal weaknesses that make him and his audience human. When you see JJ Grey and his band Mofro live—and you truly, absolutely must—the man is fearless.Onstage, Grey delivers his songs with compassion and a relentless honesty, but perhaps not until Ol’ Glory has a studio record captured the fierceness and intimacy that defines a Grey live performance.
